A truly inspiring read gripping in colloquial humour. Relatable from the outset, Micky’s journey hits right home in a way that makes us look at ourselves and take a moment to contemplate our life choices.
I met Micky in summer of 2023 when he was preparing to complete the Ironman triathlon for charity. Already an impressive feat, I wanted to investigate the reasoning behind Micky’s decision to take on the mammoth challenge, especially at the age of 50 – mad!
But it was when he opened up the insight to his past, his ambitions and his drive, detailed in this book, is when it struck the chords of my heart. Our conversation was a rollercoaster of emotion, from empathy to admiration, understanding to inspiration.
Micky’s journey affected me in ways no bully, parent or coach had, and I too decided to address my fitness and health issues. I was awe struck by the integrity taken by Micky to better himself selflessly, at a stage of life when he should be settling. Instead, it’s a new lease of life for a man who had enough living in complacent comfort.
I hope this book will inspire others as I have been, and I hope Micky will continue to be admired by his sons, his wife, his club members, and to anyone who thinks they can’t change. Keep rockin’ Micky!
“Read how I changed from being a young, rebellious Iron Maiden fan, who didn’t care about himself, to ending up in the middle of a mid-life crisis that would push me into entering one of the toughest physical challenges on the planet!"
"Powerlessness, under control, living in fear, social deprivation and emotional instability had left their marks on me but it would not be until much later in adulthood that I would come to understand this and begin to fight back for myself. Back then I was forging a sense of myself based on my experiences and my environment, one of low self-worth, low self-esteem and even self-hate."
"... bad habits, low self-worth and a self-defeatist attitude; drifting from one job to the next; from one pub to the next; from one rock concert to the next. I was overweight, out of shape, out of breath from smoking and living each day without any idea of what to do or where I was going. Listening to Iron Maiden with a bag of beer and a pack of cigarettes was my comfort blanket ..."
It's more a book that says, look at you, we are the same, I believe in you and want you to know that until you believe in yourself, I will believe in you and give you a road map to becoming the best version of yourself, all you have to do is follow it until you get to the point you believe in you too.
Thank you for sharing the ups and downs of your journey with us, I know it will inspire a lot of people just as it has inspired me.
I’ve followed Mickey’s transition for a couple of years now on his Facebook page and this book opens on why he wanted to change things up big time. He’s a credit to himself and his family and an inspiration to us all. I will be turning 50 later this year and while I have no inclination to do an Ironman (mad!!) I have certainly embraced the need to change my lifestyle - monkey see, monkey do!
I read this in one sitting. Was expecting it to be a guide to an Ironman, but it was so much more. Micky described his journey, his rebirth, from a negative place in life to a new life. He did this with such honesty (and humour). He has a beautiful family but was still struggling with his self worth. Through his training as a professional social worker he took on the challenge to change, and did. The Ironman seemed to be a means to and end. Fantastic read! Left me wanting more.
